What’s the most innovative idea that you’ve tried in your classroom?
The Civil War traveling trunk from The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History is an innovative way I enhance my lessons on the Civil War. The trunk includes reproduction soldier gear and letters, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other sources to fully investigate this unit. The students are always excited and engaged.
Who is the best teacher you ever had and what made him or her special?
I am fortunate to have had amazing and impactful teachers throughout my education. Ms. Arthurton, my third-grade teacher, is special. She always made me feel like I mattered, and she consistently believed in me. She formed meaningful relationships with all her students, and her actions always matched her words. She is one of the reasons I am a teacher today.
What can parents do to prepare their children for learning?
Parents can encourage curiosity, read with their kids, promote play, and engage in conversations that help to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Parents can also share positive affirmations with their children daily. Every day is an opportunity to be great!
What are the obstacles to getting all kids to achieve?
Every student comes from a different home environment or cultural background, so it can be an obstacle to bridge the gaps in-between. Teachers should invest time in learning each student’s background to provide a cohesive and inclusive classroom experience. Exploring different cultures in the classroom aids in inspiring students and stresses the importance of personal identity.
