National Principals Month Spotlight: Dr. Carolyn Daugherty of Bascomb ES!

October is National Principals Month!  Our Principals are Elevating the Excellence every day in our schools by providing leadership and inspiration.  We’re recognizing one of these amazing leaders each day.  Please join us in thanking them for all they do each day for our students and families, teachers and staff, and communities! #CCSDElevateTheExcellence  #ThankAPrincipal

Bascomb ES Principal Dr. Carolyn Daugherty

Why did you choose to become a Principal?
I became a principal because I want to support and collaborate with other professionals to create a caring community of learning where students and staff can grow and thrive.  It was never my ultimate goal to become a principal when I started my career as a teacher, but every few years I felt a desire to do something a little different; I wanted to do more, and then more until I landed this dream job.  I love the teamwork approach to continuously reach for more and “better” opportunities for our students.  Being a principal is more rewarding than anyone could possibly imagine.

What inspires you in your work as a principal?
Since I came through the Cherokee County School System, graduating from Etowah High School, it has been a significant journey for me to move through from an 18 year old After School Program teacher, classroom teacher, assistant principal, and now principal.  I’ve worked in all but one innovation zone throughout my 27 years in Cherokee.  Coming to Bascomb has been a “coming home” for me.  My Bobcats moving on to Eagle Mountain gives me great pride and joy.  Seeing growth in both students and staff creates such a positive and dynamic environment.  It’s rewarding to witness the transformations that take place and the small role I can play in those moments.

How are you Elevating the Excellence in your school?
We are elevating the excellence at Bascomb by leaning on our CCSD Key Priorities and emphasizing rigor, growth, and effective feedback.  We hope to create a place of learning that encourages continuous improvement and high standards.  We focus each day on building a positive culture and climate with our #4dens1pack.  Our teachers and support staff are beyond dedicated and our community supports us consistently; we will elevate the excellence together, as a team.
